At War - Infidel (2009)

It's official...just about every obscure thrash band from any neck of the woods has now reunited and released new material. At War was a pretty unheard of thrash band when they released two albums in the 80s, 'Ordered to Kill' and 'Retaliatory Strike'. The latter was a meaty, barbaric war metal record with some fairly catchy tracks. 21 years after the fact, At War have created 'Infidel', an album that sticks entirely to their roots even if it benefits from a slightly denser, brutal mix.

I remember when I randomly gnabbed their first demo off the IRC ages ago and enjoyed the shit out of it (I'll up it later). Dooooooommmmmm.

The band nows plays a more funeral doom sound - toning down the melody aspects of their sound but still keeping it FEROCIOUS. Everything is awesome about this. You should get it.

Criminal - White Hell (2009)

Born in Chile, despite having moved to England later because of economic difficulties, Criminal were formed in the beginning of the 90’s by Anton Reisenegger (vocals and rhythm guitar) and Rodrigo Contreras (lead guitar). “White Hell” is their new album, where they offer us twelve songs full of intensity and contagious hatred.
In this sixth record, Criminal shows us a mixture of Thrash Metal and Swedish Death Metal, where there’s still space for some modern Metal influences. So it’ll be normal if bands like Slayer, The Haunted, The Crown and even Lamb Of God come up to our memory during the listening of this full-length.

Lithuria - World Ending Pestilence (2008)

Non-shitty, non-lo-fi Finnish slam death. The production is great, which is pretty much a deviation by itself, considering the style. The rest is just bouncetastic slam in it's purest form. The bad thing is, Lithuria don't have any full-length albums or any release longer than 15 minutes, so this is all I can give you right now. These 3 songs are totally worth it though, it's some of the best slam death I've heard recently.

Acheron - Anti-God, Anti-Christ (1996)

It seems that Acheron learned the lesson from "Rites of the Black Mass" and decided to make a record that is far more competent, but still, not without it's flaws. Like "Rites", half of the total number of tracks are composed of intros which, this time not as annoying, they are still extremely cheesy. Not that I have something against the fight between mankind and christianity, but you can do better for the overall effect. For instance, the intro before "Total War". Listen to the keys. Yikes. Now, the good stuff. The first four songs (not counting the intros) are prime examples of atmospheric death metal. The guitar player finaly learned to equalize the rhythm guitar tone properly and it actually crushes instead of being wind-like. The keyboard parts are well made, too, and it serves for a haunting effect much like those on Nocturnus' "The Key". Again, the lead guitar work is top notch, with some really nice shredding without going down into excessive wanking, instead the use of nice melodies and fast, but coherent patterns make the songs even more interesting. The songs themselves follow a minimalistic approach at songwriting, with repetitive riffing, well complemented by the other instruments and specially the vocals, which carry the songs effectively. Lyrics may be a bit simple, but is the vocal delivery that counts, and it works well. The exception to this is the final track "Total War". It's drum oriented, with a VERY repetitive marching pattern played by the snare, and some keys thrown for the ambience touch. Just filler material, IMO, therefore not recommended like the other tracks. It has it's moment, though, near the end when the vocals stop being silly and gain some strenght to them, for the final declaration. Yep. Acheron learned the lesson. It isn't flawless, but, hey, it kills "Rites of the Black Mass", the record guilty of giving me a sour initial impression of this band. I'll be definitely checking some of their other shit. Highlighted songs: "Fuck the Ways of Christ", "Shemhamforash", "Blessed by Damnation", "Baptism for Devlyn Alexandra".

Acheron - Lex Talionis / Satanic Victory (1999)

The music alters between fast’n’ thrashy and slow’n’doomy. The songs often combine both these elements and it’s here that Acheron’s strength lies. As I said before, the music are pretty simple, this is definitely not technical death metal, easy to get into and the choruses are easy to remember. Acheron deliver with heaviness and conviction. The slow riffs during the first part of “Inner Beasts” remind me quite a lot of Black Sabbath and create a great doomy feel. More oppressive doomy atmospheres can be found on tracks like “Enter Thy Coven” and “Voices Within”. “Legions of Hatred”, “Slaughterisation for Satan” and “Purification Day” represent the faster, headbangable aspect of the album.

Acheron - Those Who Have Risen (1998)

On this album Acheron continue on the path they started walking with “Anti-God, Anti-Christ”. That means: simple mid-tempo atmospheric death metal with some doomy touches. “Those Who Have Risen” is the first Acheron album not to feature any intros between the songs, something that already had become a tradition for this band. Only the intro “Nosferatu Prelude” is a keyboard piece (and too long in my opinion, clocking in at almost six minutes). The keyboards are used almost constantly on every song throughout the album. Most of the time they simply follow the guitar riffs and create a backdrop for the rest of the music. Just like “Anti-God, Anti-Christ”, this album was recorded at Audio Lab Studios and I’m sad to say that the result again isn’t much to my taste. The guitars are too thin and down in the mix (why?) and also otherwise the production lacks punch to some degree. Things would’ve sounded a lot better with a heavier guitar sound and the guitars more upfront in the mix. Also the complete lack of fast parts is something that I think lessens the impact of the music. The old Acheron stuff always contained some fast thrashy parts which contrasted the slow parts and made their music very enjoyable despite its simplicity. On this album every song sounds pretty similar to the next: simple heavy riffs, pretty much the same tempo in every song and nearly ever-present synths. On the previous album Acheron started to write longer tracks than before and this development continues on “Those Who Have Risen”. The idea of longer songs doesn’t always work though, because I occasionally feel a bit bored by the material. I don’t think that the band always had enough ideas and riffs for such long songs. Cutting the tracks down by a few minutes would’ve been a good idea. Despite these shortcomings “Those Who Have Risen” is a decent and quite solid album as a whole. The “problem” is that there’s nothing that grabs your attention immediately, you have to let the music grow on you before it opens up. There are no hit songs and no riffs that immediately make you want to headbang. The best tracks here are “Lifeforce (the Blood)”, “Hekal Tiamat”, “Necromanteion Communion” and “Out of Body”, all of which have good flow to them despite not being very varied and manage to avoid the boredom trap that some other tracks on this album fall prey to. The four tracks I mentioned work very well even without any fast parts and sound very dark. Michael Estes’ solos on this album are good, the guy’s a shredder, but at the same time I have to repeat what I said in my review of “Lex Talionis”: I feel that these kinds of solos are too refined for a band like Acheron. However, this is more of a minor complaint, some people love these types of solos. I usually do so as well but they just don’t fit every band in my opinion. The lyrics on this album aren’t directly Satanic as they used to be before, this time the lyrical concept deals with vampirism, more specifically The Temple of the Vampire. Acheron fans have probably checked this album out already, if not, keep in mind that this album isn’t as aggressive as e.g. “Rites of the Black Mass” and “Lex Talionis”. Even if I don’t think this is a bad album per se, I still like the early Acheron albums better, as they were more in-your-face and extreme. The inclusion of some fast parts in the songs, varying the arrangements a bit more and a better production are all factors that would have made “Those Who Have Risen” better than it is now.

Acheron - Rites Of The Black Mass (1992) Re-issued in 2008

These guys look like a hair metal band, but they play crushing early blackened death metal? Who the heck is JL America/Turbo Records anyhow? My first impressions of this one by Florida's Satanic death metal masters Acheron. There are several things which make this album uncomfortable to most modern death metal fans. Beyond the above sentiments, of course. First, and probably chief of these, are the intros by Peter H Gilmore. All synergy with the Church of Satan aside. These scattered bits of ambience by Gilmore are, more or less, there to set the tone of the concept. Not a difficult concept. An actual - CoS approved - black mass set to record. Acheron represents in this, an early blackened death metal band writing anthems reiterating the concepts of the ambient portions. Tuning and defining them further. When I got this album back in 1994 it was entirely different. Sure you had bands like Possessed, and the Norweigan black metal scene at this point had sort of run its course. Though none of the bands that preceeded Acheron had done the devil's music with so much honesty. Perhaps the second blow for Acheron. Nothing here is built on pure fantasy. Sure it sounds a lot like Deicide in many respects. Deicide pulled lyrical concept from movies like Evil Dead *"Dead By Dawn"*. Most other bands at the time tried not to come off as being preachers. Even within the extreme metal genres. Acheron, on the otherhand, ARE here to be preachers. This is as close to a Satanic gospel record as there is out there. This concept is a bit difficult for the more "mainstream", heavily christianized conscience of the death metal crowd. This is true as much in those times, as it is today. Acheron's "Rites Of The Black Mass" finds itself more at home among fans of black metal than death metal for that reason as well. The openly Satanic stance, made all the more punctualized by Crowley's involvement in the CoS. The dirty guitars. Which seem to be almost formless, untill the bass and drums shape them into a chaotic, at times droning, frenzy. The Deicide style vocal. Most notable on tracks such as "Ave Satanas" and "Thou Art Lord". Topped off with a dirty production that isn't the worst out there, but dirty nonetheless. The schtick here works almost like b-grade horror. Which is to say, something that's so inherently wrong about the proceedure gives it its own unique attractiveness. From the opening moments of the first intro, to the closing final notes of "Let Us Depart" this album stands and falls on its own merits. Though it's never boring. Unlike many of their peers, and indeed unlike the albums which would follow this one. When the pinnacle of a bands career is the first album, perhaps that's a hard sell. Though, this deserves attention, as well as praise. Any one of these things may be a detractor for other bands. Here, they are all working together to form a cohesive voice for Acheron. Something that is missing on the later albums. It personally retains the same kind of death metal mastery that Deicide's early work did. Highly worth the price to seek it out, or find it for download it before you buy it. Either way, a great work that's sure to get under your skin - for better and for worse.

8 Foot Sativa - Poison Of Ages (2007) [NEW LINKS]

Poison Of Ages (2007)

Ok.. where to start originally to be released 8th may 2006.. but was in fact released 21st of may 2007. The wait had me a bit annoyed, but damn it was worth it. The addition of William Cleverdon on guitars and Ben Read on vocals made this album that whole lot better.
from the last albums it's easy to tell that the riffs have had a lot more thought put into them and it's clear that Ben is a master lyricist. The lyrics take the point of view of a vegan, and is indeed showing how mankind has poisoned the world and it's ways over time. Reading the lyrics, and understanding them made this album even better than what it was. The drums (recorded and written by Steven Westerberg of Carnal Forge) were tight as fuck and straight up thrash metal, nothing over the top. The guitar riffs were just unbelievable, the tone was killer and it showed that Gary and William (only about 20 at the time) are a force to reckon with. So technical and ever changing. nearly every song has a solo that isn't overdone and that fits perfectly. This is a solid effort by 8 Foot Sativa and landmarks New Zealand on the metal map. I can't wait for the next album by the boys. Keep it up.

id_ re-hosted this (again) cuz you fuckbags don't get it.

The Acacia Strain - Continent (2008) [new link]

Continent is an album that may not leave a lasting impression on me, but it is an album that you can really get into when it is on. There guitar sound, which is the centerpiece of the act, is excellent. They tune way down and procced to deliver these riffs of utter destruction. You can practically see them on stage tearing it up with a sea of people surging in front of them, limbs and bodies flying in all directions. This is violent music that just begs for you to break something. Daniel Laskiewicz is the man behind the thick guitar sound, which I understand is heavily multi-tracked in the studio (especially since the band's line up has dwindled from three guitarists down to one). He does some very nice work mixing it up while keeping the aggression in place. Backing him up are the drums of Kevin Boutot and solid bass work from Jack Strong, the newest addition to the band. Leading the charge into battle is Vincent Bennett, whose growled vocals actually stand out from the pack. The sound of the voice is generally one of the last things I consider, mainly due to so many sound alike growlers, but Bennett's is quite good. I may not know what he is saying most of the time, but he sounds good doing it. When you press play, here are a few tracks to pay attention to: "Skynet," "Seaward," "Balboa Towers," "Kraken," and the album closing instrumental "The Behemoth." Bottomline. This is a good album. It does not rank among my favorites, and I cannot say how often I will revisit it, but it is a cut above. The Acacia Strain put a lot of work into crafting these supremely heavy songs and their hard work shows. If you like heavy music, this is going to be for you. Best recomendations!

The Acacia Strain - The Dead Walk (2006) [new link]

With the band's new record, The Acacia Strain have proved its intense and unforgiving musical tonnage has not compromised the band's lyrical and aural integrity. The Dead Walk has The Acacia Strain making a social critique on the lull in cultural comfort, all the while displaying the band's brutal heaviness alongside an uncanny, mosh-worthy sense of rhythm. The result: some of contemporary metal's heaviest and hardest songs, without ever losing sight of the band's original goals.

The Acacia Strain - 3750 (2004) [new links]

Another contender in the quickly rising New England heavy music scene, The Acacia Strain return with their second full-length. Sludgier, slower and more restrained than your typical metalcore band, but still keeping with the breakdowns and deep, gurgled vocals you all know and love about metalcore. You can hear influences from bands like Meshuggah and Crowbar in here with the straight-forward industrial powered guitar crunch.

A Storm Of Light - Forgive Us Our Trespasses (2009)

ROCKSOUND - 8/10 review (Nov issue) "Astounding, yet chilling."
ROCKSOUND - Damnation live preview (Nov issue) "A thundering sonic combustion of hurricane proportions."
KERRANG - 3/4 review (19 Sept) "This is focused on song-craft and what unfolds is a majestically epic and intimidating soundscape. A haunting, bleak and impressive record."
ROCK A ROLLA - Oct/Nov issue) "A resounding triumph."
ZERO TOLERANCE - ONE PAGE FEATURE (Oct/Nov issue) "A powerful trio thoughtfully exploring a wide plateau of styles... whose power and oppression is derived from a newfound sense of direction.
SUBBA CULTCHA - review (21/09/09) "This time round the riffs seem even more titanic, the grooves even more grinding, and the arrangements more ambitious and spacious...this record is more than simply a worthy successor to their debut. With "Forgive...", A Storm Of Light have transcended the "side project" tab and become something very special indeed."
METAL REVIEWS - review (21/09/09) "Starting with intense percussion and gradually building melodically until before you know it the Doom riffage is in the driving seat and the melancholic beast is striding slowly towards the sunset."
METAL IRELAND - 4.5/5 review and ALBUM OF THE MONTH(21/09/09) "It’s refreshing to hear something that is totally rooted in the band’s sound and aesthetic while moving it on substantially. It’s a fantastically open album that at the same time is utterly punishing at it’s most focused moments. It demands to be spun again and again, both for its accessibility and its slow burn."

Revocation might as well be the embodiment of plain kickass metal. Formed in 2006 they're a quite young band, although professional beyond doubt. They released their debut in 2008 but noone really gave a shit, even though it was ridiculously good. With the release of their new album, they seem to be growing more popular by the day. Often labeled simply technical death/thrash, Revocation play an amalgamation of a fuckton of different styles. Maybe it's just me, but I think their music bears a resemblence to Between The Buried And Me. Technical and progressive, transcending different atmospheres and styles during the procession of one song. That, plus Psycroptic style instrumentals mixed with old-school thrash. Both albums are nothing short of excellent, I recommend them to everyone who believes they have decent taste in music, just so you realize the fact you've been wrong till the point of checking out Revocation.
